Relative to this article, the author has published a companion article, entitled the Introduction to the History of Japanese Popular Association Law, in Volume VIII of Kwansei Gakuin University Annual Studies. While their contents are not perfectly dovetailing, foreign students are referred to the aforesaid English version. The present article is divided into three chapters, viz. I The growth of popular consciousness II The concept of popular association III The themes pertinent to a future study of the history of Japanese popular association law Chapter I deals with the formation and development of the popular consciousness which was essential to the organization of popular associations, and in Chapter II the author sets forth the various concepts relevant to those associations founded on popular consciousness from the 13th century on, as well as the relationships among them, describing towns, villages, and guilds as their representative forms, and further analyzes the multi-lateral relationship among their subdivisions, conglomerates, and allied organizations, while Chapter III purports the author's memorandum for his further studies, listing such topics as the relationships these associations bore to the power of feudal regimes, especially in the area of judicial sanction, and also to the village structure as noted in those intervening centuries, and finally the scope and limits of these associations.
