The solubilities of sulfur in high boiling point hydrocarbons of petroleum show marked difference according to the countries of origin of petroleum. The solubilities of sulfur in hydrocarbons are in inverse proportion to their aniline points. We found the relation among the solubilities of sulfur and aniline points and specific gravities of hydrocarbons. Then we have determined an empirical formula to calculate the above relation. By mixing the extra low aniline point hydrocarbons, such as naphthalene, its derivatives and diphenyl, with the petroleum hydrocarbons, it was found that the solubility of sulfur in the based hydrocarbon increased. The chlorinated petroleum hydrocarbons showed a higher solvent power than the original petroleum hydrocarbons, but the solvent power of mono-chloronaphthalenes showed such a decrease as to become less than that of naphthalene. The molecular weight of normal alcohols has a relation with the solubility of sulfur.
