Globalizing Feminist Perspectives in American Studies

The feminist perspectives evidenced in current English-language American Studies were, it should be noted, developed in an American sociohistorical context. They reflect recent American concerns with multiculturalism and the politics of difference ; specifically, an in-creasing sensitivity to diversity in gendered experience, sophistication in debunking the workings of power in American society, and an awareness of the sociohistorically situated nature of knowledge. And yet, though the conversation is open internally, and increasingly inclusive of the perspectives of a wider range of American women and men of diverse backgrounds, it is largely a closed conversation, and outsider's perspectives tend to be peripheralized. It seems critically important to shake up this hierarchy of discourse, particularly when we con-sider that a rich variety of feminist perspectives have developed around the world. Current emphasis on diversity and differences in American feminism goes hand in hand with a self-reflexive denial of American exceptionalism, and tends to downplay the existence of peculiarly American habits of thinking. In the process, however, many scholars seem to overlook that just such habits unconsciously inform American feminist concepts and conceptual frame-works, and they inadvertently close off the potential of comparative perspectives. Globalization of feminist perspectives involves : 1) much more vigorous and egalitarian international exchanges of ideas through international conferences and symposia ; 2) collaborative works with other area specialists ; and 3) application of feminist theories developed elsewhere in analyses of American gender relationships and phenomena. Such efforts would place American feminism in a global matrix of feminist theory and strategy, and possibly de-naturalize the conceptual hegemony of American feminism that has so long served as the de facto measuring stick in defining gender relations and evaluating progress towards gender equality in societies around the world. A global perspective conceived in this way should bring about new configurations of research, and contribute to the creation of new paradigms for gender studies.
