Native speakers typically produce short phrase-sized chunks in naturally occurring conversation, but foreign learners are expected to produce complete sentences through dialogues in many language textbooks. This report focuses on how the systematics for the organization of turn-taking in conversation operates and how Grice's Cooperative Principle (1975) applies to each utterance in real conversation. Furthermore, the necessity of adopting higher rate of incomplete sentences in scripted conversation is emphasized from the pedagogical point of view.
