This study presented the development and validation of a new indecies of empathy for the grade school children : Picture Affectional State Test of Empathy (PASTE). PASTE consist of a series of 15 pictures. In each picture, two (or more) children are drawn, the one expressing positive or negative feeling congruent with the situation and the other (s) witnessing it. Subjects are asked to describe what the second child would think and talk to the first child. We intented to elicit projected empathic responses through this technique. Then, each response was estimated of its intensity of empathy and individual's empathy score was culculated. The scores were positively correlated with the empathy questionnaire scores and two types of peer ratings (prosocial behavior and emotional contagion). The magnitudes of these correlation coefficient were differentiated in accordance with our hypothesis. We think this measure demonstrated construct validation.
