This paper develops a conceptual framework to analyse youth phenomena in the multiple social-world. First, I review the literature on youth and youth culture in Japan from 1970s to 1980s, and point out some important concepts and reformulate them in the new socio-cultural context. Second, I suggest how the concept of identity is reformulated, following, a new interpretation of Erikson, and how the process of identity formation is influenced by the changing contexts of socialization. Third, I investigate the nature of these contexts in relation to the development of information and consumption-oriented society and the effects over the identity formation among youth.
