During the past five years from 1960 through 1965, following sounding rocket systems have been completed; i. e., Kappa-8, Kappa-8 L, Kappa-9 L, Kappa-9 M, Lambda-2, Lambda-3, and MT-135. Kappa-8 L is the improved version of K-6, and its peak altitude is 170km with 25 kg payload. It served for wind measurement by sodium vapor method and geomagnetic measurement. Kappa-8 with a booster of 420 mm diameter can climb to 200 km with 60 kg payload. Kappa-9 L is a three-stage rockt, and its peak altitude is 350 km with 25 kg payload. Kappa-9 M is the improved version of Kappa-8, and can climb to 350km with 60 kg payload. Lambda booster has a diameter of 735 mm. Two-stage Lambda-2 climbed to 410 km with 250 kg payload, and three-stage Lambda-3 climbed to 1,100 km with 100kg payload while its second booster climbed to 350km with 70kg payload. A small rocket for meteorological observation, named MT-135, has also been developed and used for wind and temperature measurement up to 60km altitude. Mu rocket is now under development and firing tests of its booster engine, with a diameter of 1.4m, have been carried out successfully in 1965 at Noshiro Testing Center. By the end of 1965, following numbers of rockets have been fired and used for space observation: K-8L(9), K-8(12), K-9M(15), L-2(2), L-3(3), MT-135(11). Firings of rockets are carried out at Kagoshima Space Center, University of Tokyo, which is equipped with all the necessary facilities for launching, telemetry, radar and optical tracking, date acquisition, assembling and check out. The items of space observations made with these rockets are, meteorology, upper atmospheric wind, ionosphere, magnetic field, radio noise, airglow and cosmic rays.
