If we should try to examine the process of the modernization of American Society in comparison to that of European countries, in the first place her vast territorial space would draw our attention as a vital factor to be dealt with. Many historians have pointed out that transportation facilities have played most important roles in the making of the American Industrial Society. In this essay, I wished to examine American Railroads before 1850, and to observe how their early construction provided the basis for her great continental advancement in the last half of the 19th Century.
