The present paper attempts to touch on the process of weighing semantic congruity in discerning the syntactic structure of a sentence. My main concern is to illustrate this point by various English constructions. Some grasp of the syntactic structure of a sentence is essential in order to understand its meaning. There must be and really are, some sort of clues in the sentence which help the hearer or reader to discern that structure. It must be emphasized that of such clues, so-called 'structure signsls' (parts of speech, word order, function words and so on) play a very important part in the process. But it should not be overlooked that for the most part they mark structure only ambiguously. And a good deal of structural ambiguity is resolved in the light of the 'lexical meaning' of a whole sentence or its components ; one of two or more possible ways of structural interpretation is selected on the ground that it supplies a higher degree of 'semantic congruity'. When there is no preponderance of semantic congruity either way, the ambiguity remains unresolved, and its resolution is left to be done by the 'context', linguistic and nonlinguistic, in which the sentence in question occurs.
