The personality characteristics of health and physical education teachers in high school are generally thought to differ from those of teachers of other subjects. This study attempted to confirm this general opinion by researching literature and conducting research in Japanese high schools in 1995. In the literature reviewed, the traits of health and physical education teachers appear to be strongly influenced by the Confucian morals of the Edo Era and the military movement of World War II. Further research was conducted through the use of questionnaire surveys distributed to health and physical education teachers, Japanese-language teachers, and mathematics teachers. In contrast to the health and physical education teachers, who tended to remain in their own staff rooms next to the school gymnasiums, the teachers in the other subjects tended to work in the general staff rooms. Seniority was much more evident in the health and physical education staff rooms than in general staff rooms. Moreover, the health and physical education teachers tended to extend this orientation to their interactions with the students, treating them uniformly in accordance with traditional values such as seniority. Thus, it was confirmed that health and physical education teachers in Japan differ from teachers of other subjects in terms of their perceived teaching roles, as well as the human relations they form.
