Prestressed concrete through box girder bridges were constructed as snow-shed structures in the mountainous regions on the Jyoetsu Shinkansen in Japan. The characteristics of the new-type bridges are : (1) they have a large section of about 10m×10m for their short spans ranging from 15m to 45m ; (2) they have no diaphragms in any section unlike the box girders of deck type. In order to study the elastic behavior of through box girders and examine the applicability of present theories of box girders to the through box girders, four 1/40-scale acrylic resin models with span-depth ratios of 5,3,2,and 1 were fabricated, and membrane and out-of-plane stresses were measured by electrical resistance strain gages for various kinds of loading conditions. From the test results and the comparisons with the theoretical results obtained by ordinary method which consists of beam theory and frame analysis, folded plate theory, and finite element method, the following conclusions were obtained : (1) each web behaves as a deep beam within the range of about the girder depth from the support, and also as a one-way slab; (2) finite element method generally gives better results than ordinary method and folded plate theory, but this method can not give easily the longitudinal tensile stresses in the lower edge of the web and the local stresses near the supports and loading points.
