The situation in German language education at Japanese universities has undergone strong changes over the last decade. A drastic decline in the number of students raises the prospect of a very uncertain future. This article looks at the possible reasons through a short recapitulation of the purpose for the introduction of German into Japan, its rapid proliferation and the almost unyielding adherence to outdated teaching methods, as well as the advances and success of other institutions. Critical views by Japanese professors familiar with the subject have been expressed at a symposium dealing with the history, development and present situation of German as a Second Foreign Language, blaming teachers to a large degree.
