• The amount of water-soluble materials lost in washing of white paddy rice and Chemical Oxygen Demand, JIS K 0102-1971, (COD Mn) of its drainage were measured. The following results were obtained: 1 . During washing five times, white paddy rice lost 1.7% of its original weight. With respect to nonprotein nitrogen, losses were found by measurement to be 40 〜49% in ammonia nitrogen and 5〜70% in amide nitrogen. The first washings contained about 60% of the total solubilized material during these treatments. 2 . The average value of COD Mn of drained water measured as to nine sorts of samples was 712ppm. COD Mn of the fifth drainage was observed to be about lOOppm. In using an auto-rice-washing-machine operated for ten minutes, the mean value of each one minute was evaluated to be 155 ppm, and the final one minute, 67ppm.
