Kare とKanojo について : 英語教育の立場からの一考察

When they meet with an English sentence "Masao came running with his camera in his hand," many Japanese students translate it into such a Japanese sententence as "Masao wa kare no te ni kare no Kamera o motte hashitte kita. " This Japanese should be corrected as follows: "Masao wa te ni Kamera o motte hashitte kita." It is generally said that 'Kare' and 'Kanojo' cannot yet find their places in good Japanese expressions. This small thesis tries to prove that, by reading some novels, 'Kare' has its own special meaning and it can never correspond to 'he (his, him)', and to find, by getting a survey of four examples, how to deal with 'he (his, him)' and 'she (her, her)' in Engl ish-Japanese translation. Of course, this kind of study needs a lot of samples. In this respect, this thesis should be called an interim report.
