Glasses have been prepared in the systems RO-Ga2O3 (R=Ca, Sr, Ba) in the wide range of composition using rapid quenching technique. The glass forming regions obtained in this research were 30~70 mol% CaO, 20~45, 55~80mol% SrO, 20~40, 65~75 mol% BaO and were wider than any other reports. In order to clarify the structure of the glass and glass forming mechanism, measurement of infrared spectra, chemical shift of X-ray fluorescence spectra and viscosity of the melt have been done. From the results of these measurements, with addition of basic oxide, oxygen coordination number of gallium ion changes from 6 to 4 and polymerization degree of four oxygen coordinated gallium ion increases to cause the formation of network structure large enough to form the glass. Tendency of the change is determined by the intensity of the basicity of the added basic oxide and it can be estimated by the calculated basicity parameter. These results are common result of intermediate oxide M203 (M=Al, Ga, Fe).
