• Carston (1996) claims that the crucial property of metalinguistic use of negation (MN) is that the material falling in the scope of a negation operator is implicitly echoic. This paper aims to provide a unified analysis as regards the target of MN, i. e. the aspects of the source of an echo that can be brought within the scope of a negation operator by the material echoed, from the cognitive processing point of view adopted by relevance theory. Limiting the data to MN cases where the source of an echo is an utterance (attributed utterance). I suggest that the target of MN should be stipulated as that which is expressed but not communicated by the attributed utterance.
