This paper presents a student-centred activity which can be carried out with great easein the classroom to test the speaking and listening abilities of Japanese university students. The paper is composed of two main parts. Part One will describe what we termthe ‘telephone station’, a task-based activity focused on ‘real world’ telephone conversations, and a procedure that can be used for assessment. Part Two will describe waysin which the telephone station can be extended. The telephone station is flexible in thatstudents are given the opportunity to control the communication process in a mannerthat suits their abilities and their interests. This activity is of value because it allowsstudents not only to enjoy using the target language but also to take control of theirown learning. Three options will be suggested for task extension. A Summary will follow.
