Long-term potentiation (LTP) and long-term depression (LTD), often used as essential components in synaptic models of learning, memory and forgetting, can be produced in cortical tissue by repetitive tissue by repetitive activation of neural pathways under different stimulus conditions. To examine whether metabotropic glutamate receptors (mGluRs) play a role in the induction of LTP and/or LTD, an antagonist of mGluRs, (RS)-α-methyl-4-carboxyphenylglycine (MCPG), was administered to visual cortical slices obtained from young rats (20-30 days postnatal). MCPG blocked LTD, but was ineffective against the induction of LTP in most of slices tested. These results suggest the critical involvement of mGluRs in producing LTD but not LTP in the visual cortex.
