A method for estimating the age at death using the image processing of soft X-ray pictures of the thyroid cartilages of Japanese females was examined. The specimens were collected from 513 individuals between 15 and 95 yeares of age. The age estimation equations were derived using materials from the individuals 20 to 80 years of age. The perichondrium was removed before taking their soft X-ray pictures. Prior to the image processing, subjective assessment was made on the indices of gross morphological findings. The soft X-ray pictures showed increasing ossification with age. Four indices for image processing were introduced. They were ossification rate (OSFR) and secondary moment (GLDM), contrast (GLDC), and entropy (GLDE) based on the Gray Level difference statistics. Only GLDM showed an exponential variation and the others linear variation. Corresponding to each index, four age estimation equations were obtained. These age estimation equations showed accuracies of 70% or more for the age range of ±5 years and about 90% for the age range of ±8 years. The equations were applicable in the age range of 20 to 80 years and were sufficiently accurate to be applied for age estimation in the field of person appraisal in legal medicine.
