In an attempt to clarify the etiology of spondylolysis from a biomechanical aspect, two dimensional finite element stress analysis of the pars interarticularis of the lower lumbar vertebra under stress was carried out. In the analyses using the finite element models, the material properties of the cortical bone, cancellous bone and articular cartilage were considered. The biomechanical behavior of the pars interarticularis was identified as follows. The forces applied to the superior and the inferior articular facets were concentrated on the pars interarticularis. Highly stressed areas were found in the cortical bone of pars interarticularis. The smaller amount of cortical bone in the pars interarticularis results in having the higher concentration of stress. These findings suggest that the main cause of the occurrence of spondylolysis may be the high concentration of stress on the pars interarticularis, particularly on its cortical bone.
