Experimental study was performed to investigate the affinity of metal coated with ceramics for the bone and joint. In this investigation three kinds of materials were used : Ti-6A1-4V coated with hydroxyapatite, Vitallium [○!R] coated with alumina and Ti-6A1-4V coated with TiO_2. Small pegs of those materials were inserted into the femoral condyles of rabbits from the medial to the lateral through the intercondylar notch. After sacrifice, new bone formation at the interface between the implants and the bones was investigated histologically. The new bone formation around the implants in the bone was observed 2 weeks after the surgery and remodelled 26 weeks later. Fibrous tissue was seen at the part of the interface between the TiO_2 coated implant and the bones. Four weeks after the operation the joint where the alumina or the TiO_2 coated implant was inserted showed the mild synovitis with scanty mononuclear infiltration, which was only slightly observed 22 weeks later. However, severe synovitis occurred on the joint where the HAP coated implant was inserted 8 weeks after the operation.
