Blood flow is the most important factor for the healing of anastomosis of the gastrointestinal tract. The author tried to prevent anastomotic leakage of the gastrointestinal tract by increasing blood supply to anastomotic area. A pedunculated jejunal segment having one arcade artery of dogs was prepared, and the vasa recta branching off from the artery were ligated alternately, while the blood flow of the vasa recta nearest to the distal side as well as the blood flow in the tissue was measured. It was proved that blood flow increased remarkably by alternately ligating of vasa recta. The intravascular blood flow increased by 23.6%, and the blood flow in the tissue increased by 38.1%. And the blood flow in the tissue of the gastric tube with one half breadth increased by 32.4%, by alternate ligation of the vasa recta branching off from the right gastroepiploic artery. The alternate ligation of vasa recta of the gastric tube was clinically employed in four patients with the intrathoracic esophageal cancer. The better results were obtained.
