By using a CO_2 laser, which has been used increasingly in the medical field lately, a study was made of the joining and the grafting of sciatic nerves in rats by making histological, dynamic, pathological, kinetic and electrophysiological comparisons with the case employing manual sutures heretofore in use. To avoid damaging the nerve fibers, the optimum CO_2 laser irradiation was determined to be 0.2 watts and 2 seconds. Under this condition, the nerves were "welded" together by irradiating the CO_2 laser beam onto stay sutures. Tension tests showed normal values 3 weeks after the welding. At 10-12 weeks after the welding, histological, pathological and kinetic recovery was noted, and electrophysiological examination showed the recovery of 80% of the normal values of motor nerve conduction velocity (MCV). Furthermore, 1.5cm nerve grafting was performed with CO_2 laser onto 2 part 2-stay sutures, and then compared with conventional nerve grafting (2 part 5-stay sutures). In both cases, the tension tests showed normal values in 3 weeks, and in 16 weeks histological and pathological recovery after the operation was observed, and showed 70% of the MCV's normal values. The operation time was reduced by using the CO_2 laser to between 1/3 and 1/4 of the time usually required in the case of conventional nerve suture or grafting.
