Acute epiglottitis and acute supra-glottic laryngitis were surveyed with reference to literature. The following conclusions were drawn : 1. Acute epiglottitis and acute supra-glottic laryngitis are described as a synonym to each other in many articles, and are defined as acute inflammatory edema of the epiglottis and other supra-glottic structures of the larynx, resulting in laryngeal obstruction due to swelling and immobilization of that structure. It may be practical and useful to subdivide this disease from the pathophysiological stand-point into three types. 2. The type I is defined as a localized inflammatory change of the epiglottis without remarkable inflammation in the adjacent tissue of the larynx. 3. The type II is defined as a relatively diffuse inflammatory change in the supra-glottic tissue of the larynx except the epiglottis. 4. The type III is defined as a serious inflammatory change in the various parts of the supra-glottic laryngeal region including the epiglottis. 5. The significant symptoms caused by these disorders are dyspnea and dysphagia due to mechanical obstruction of the larynx and the hypopharynx. The aim of therapy in such disorders is to preclude the obstruction of these structures, treating at the same time the associated hypoxia.
