The result of a survey on the care of 229 elderly patients admitted to Kinki University Hospital (abbreviated into K hospital in this paper) is reported in the following. In K hospital the majority of the elderly patients were patients requiring surgery and mild or severe cases, patients older than 70 years old and cases with complications being comparatively small in number, compared with those in other hospitals. The hospital service area was divided into local service area (11.8%), intermediate service area (48.5%), and regional service area (80.3%). As to the relationship of diseases to the service area, such diseases as malignant neoorganisms being apt to be encountered in the regional service and such ones as ophthalmic or urogenital diseases being apt to be encountered in the intermediate or regional service were large in number, while such ones as diseases of the circulatory system or the respiratory organs being apt to be encountered in the local service were comparatively small in number. That is, what the inhabitant really wants K hospital to be is an institution playing a role consisting of the role of the tertiary institution as the central hospital of the regional service area and the role of the secondary institution as a leading hospital of the intermediate service area. The ages and diseases of the patients, the standing conditions of the hospital, especially distribution of the surrounding institutions, and the number of introduced patients greatly participated in the actual circumstances. The result above mentioned apparently indicates that detailed surveys after taking these conditions into consideration are the matter of importance in the planning of regional medical service.
