As mentioned above the authors synthesized several long-chained alkylamine bases and investigated their bactericidal properties. From this study it was found that dimethyl-lauril-amineoxide hydrochloride which was newly synthesized had much less ttxicity and irritative action to the tissue. An attempt was then made to see whether this compound controls gas production without marked inhibition of intestinal flora. In this experiment the compound was compared with several sorts of antiseptics such as p-hydroxybenzoic acid butylester and β-naphtol. According to the report of Dr. Shikata, bacterial glucolysis may be classified into both of acid formation and gas production. From this point of view it can be said that amineoxide does not inhibit acid formation (1 : 25,000) but does gas production whereas thymol and β-naphtol inhibit both acid formation and gas production as the result of the bactericidal activity. In the mechanism of action it can be considered that the former is cationcenter and the reaction is reversible but the latter is anioncenter and the reaction is irreversible.
