Nicholas Iakovlevich Danilevsky (1822-1885) is well-known for his Russia and Europe and counted among the great figures in Russian intellectual history. In this book he dwelt upon the coming of a total and inevitable strife or war between Europe and Russia or rather the Slavs led by Russia and prophesied the inevita-bleness of Russia's victory. It is natural, then, that he should have been looked upon as a theoretical leader of the Panslavist movement. This prophecy of his was based on his theory of "cultural-historical types" or civilizations, or more particularly on his basic theory of comparative civilizations, which he developed in the book. Since Pitirim Sorokin, a famous naturalized American cultural sociologist of Russian birth, re-examined the theory and introduced Danilevsky as a forerunner of Spengler and Toynbee, it has widely been recognized that his theory has its own objective value independent of his prophecy and he has been rated as a great contributor to the comparative study of civilizations. In this essay the writer tries to take up Danilevsky's basic theory of comparative civilizations, to give a commentary on it and to evaluate its significance in the field of comparative study of civilizations.
