In this age of world-wide transition the world seems to be witnessing the birth of an ecumenical civilization. This process of transition began with the expansion of the Western civilization. Under its impact on the non-Western civilizations and through their reactions to it, both of them are now compelled to change themselves radically-presumably into sub-civilizations of the coming world civilization. Any of them as well as the Western civilization itself will never succeed in surviving the future without accepting the fate, whether readily or reluctantly. They all have no alternative but to choose the way. Or they will perish. Our own civilization makes no exception as well. Can it overcome this crisis and survive the future? The answer will be given only through comparative study of historical civilizations, though such an undertaking is technically unseasonable. As a way of approaching the problem we shall take up and examine Alfred Weber's theory of inner structure of civilizations. In it he proposes to divide the parts or components of civilizations into three spheres, that is, social process or Gesellschaftsprozeβ, civilizational process or Zivilisationsprozeβ and cultural movement or Kulturbewegung and observes the dynamic interrelationships of the three. After examining this theory, we shall try to bring out its significance to our task.
