This essay is intended to give an account of Puritanism and of the shaping of American democracy as the thought background of early American literature. On Puritanism, the Pilgrim Fathers are described in the historical context and a few opinions by some American scholars of the characters of Massachusetts Bay Colony are mentioned. Moreover it is suggested that the main current in Puritanism may be the Pilgrims who had hard fights in founding Plymouth Colony, and Roger Williams who founded Rhode Island Colony rather than the Puritans who established the Bay Colony. On the shaping of American democracy, the American Revolution, which was the first step of the democracy, is touched upon, with emphasis on the personality of George Washington and the important role played by Thomas Paine. And further, Thomas Jefferson and his thought are mentioned, in contrast with Alexander Hamilton and his.
