In sub-contruting companies which manufacture their products in accordance with the order from the prime-contructing company, it is often necessary to have safety stock or to carry out additional production, if Material Requirements Planning and Just-In-Time methods fail to meet the requirments. In order to determine the optimum quantity of safety stock in such a situation on the basis of order reception pattern in the past, the author examined the simplified chart method. While the quantity of safety stock depends on various factors such as inventory carrying charges control and tool set up or preparation cost, effects of the production lot size must be comprehensively taken into consideration.
