A survey study assessed nationalistic and patriotic attitudes among Japanese respondents. The National Identity Scale was developed refining Sakano's (1992) scale which was a direct translation of Kosterman and Feshbach's (1989) Patriotism/Nationalism Scale. Responses from 274 Japanese college students were factor-analyzed. Results partly replicated the factor structure reported by Sakano and Kosterman-Feshbach including the three major factors of Nationalism, Internationalism, and Patriotism. An additional aspect of nationalism, the Commitment to National Heritage, emerged as a distinct factor. Factor scores were correlated with respondents' knowledge regarding Japanese culture and history as well as international affairs. It was found that Nationalism and Commitment to National Heritage were negatively correlated with both kinds of knowledge, whereas Patriotism showed a positive correlation. Implications for the study of Japanese attitudes to-ward international relations were discussed.
