Thiamine deficiency (TD) produces neuronal apoptosis in the medial thalamus. The aim of this study is to clarify whether or not the apoptotic process is associated with cytochrome c distributed in the cytosol. The thalamus of TD rats was examined by the methods for histology, including the TUNEL method (Tm), immunohistological methods for cytochrome c (Ice), and the combined use of Tm and Ice. The neuronal cells revealing the characteristic features of degeneration and necrosis on H-E sections had Tm-positive nuclei showing the cytosol diffusely stained with cytochrome c. Positive Tm was preceded by diffuse staining of cytosol with Ice, suggesting that neuronal death in the medial thalamus in TD rats is of an apoptotic nature associated with cytochrome c redistributed diffusely in their cvtosol.
