The purpose for initiating this study is to demonstrate both the developmental stages of depression in children and the factors causing it. The first step of this ongoing study is to arrange the developmental stages discovered in both an analysis of Children's Depression Inventory (CDI) scores and a subsequent analysis a year later. CDI was prepared and used to assess the level of depression in juveniles by using average children as subjects (113 children in fourth grade elementary school and 106 children in fifth grade elementary school). From the point of view of the children's mental health, the results of this assessment are as follows : l) The average CDI score for boys decreased from the first year (1992) to the subsequent year (1993). 2) Both the number and proportion of children with "highrisk" decreased as well. 3) Making practical use of the CDI results and comments, teachers were able to detect and understand children's mental health early and provide them with appropriate guidance. Five cases were examined to discover how to use both the CDI results and comments, as well as what determined the effectiveness of the change in the children's mental health.
