ALA synthetase(ALAS) activities in each lobe of rat livers were measured to clarify a lobe-distribution of the enzyme. The level of ALAS activity was always higher in the right median lobes than in the left lateral lobes of livers obtained either from untreated, phenobarbital-treated or DDC-treated animals, although the difference was not statistically significant. Treatment of rats with ethanol increased ALAS activity in each lobe and the induced enzyme activity showed significantly higher in the right median lobes than in the left lateral lobes. The present results indicated that the ALAS activity was distributed heterogeneously within the lobes of liver, and the extent of an induction of the enzyme by the alcohol treatment was different among the lobes.
