This essey offers some preliminary thoughts on constructive social work. We have become aware of the growing intellectual interest in social theory and human sience more generally of a number of theoretical development associated with social constructionism, postmodernity, and more specifically, the centrality of lunguage and narrative for understanding both the social world and what it is to be human. Most of social workers do not presume to know what is best and what to do, so that the ability to work with ambiguity and uncertainty both in terms of process and outcome is key. The prime focus here is concerned with issues of the nature of social work practice theory and inparticular the theory/practice relationship. It argues that social work proceeds on the basis that practice is characterised as a practical-moral activity rather than a rational-technical one. And also, it argues the such issues are crucially influenced by changing social and political contexts and that the present-day point to the importance of developing social constructionist and narrative approach to social work practice.
