This paper is an account of an Action Research project exploring why the author's Japanese students ask few questions during classroom debates. It is firmly grounded in extensive qualitative data from the classroom : particularly three discussions with students which the author considers critical moments. Full transcripts are included in the paper. Data was generated by videotaping classroom exchanges, a teacher's diary, students' written evaluation and a questionnaire. Current TEFL theory is drawn in and applied to debating. The author concludes that although he took the problem of question asking to be one of language production, input comprehension would seem to have a larger impact on students' question asking. An evaluation of Action Research cycles is also included.
