This theoretical paper explores aspects of teaching argumentation in Japanese EFL class, the relationship between language and conceptual thought as well as the sense of belonging to a linguistic community. Students' educational background is also considered. The author claims that argumentation is part of language teaching. A theory of argumentation is offered.
