Lafcadio Hearn (1850-1904) came to Japan in 1890. In fourteen years he was to establish himself as one of the great interpreters of Japan to the West. This brief essay focuses on one of his first jobs in Japan, a one-year assignment teaching English language in a middle school in Matsue, Shimane prefecture. His experience there is not only illustrative of Hearn's early encounter with Japan and things Japanese; it is also an interesting account of the victory of context, enthusiasm and luck-over lack of formal training in language teaching method.
