• This paper surveys the present state of Virtual Learning Environments in Japan. Substantial hands-on testing was conducted of over 30 sites and the 10 most interactive have been selected and are categorised here in terms of their design. Observations as to the nature of these sites is explored and then related to education and technology in Japan. As there are few studies of VLEs in non-Western cultures, this research adds to the body of literature on new information technologies in Japanese education.
