Nitrogen loads generated from different sources such as human, livestock, farmland, urban area and forest in Gunma Prefecture were evaluated using a pollutant load factor. The results showed that livestock waste was the major source of nitrogen load. The feasibility of a falling water oxidation ditch (FWOD) process for nitrogen removal from livestock wastewater was also investigated. In the FWOD process, an axial flow pump was used for aeration. The process was operated at the HRT of 50 days and volumetric load of about 0.24 kg-BOD/m^3/d. About 90% of the influent nitrogen was denitrified by through the process. In addition, organic matters being included in the influent wastewater was completely treated. The FWOD process is effective for the advanced treatment of the livestock wastewater.
