Over the past half century the developments of language labs have gone through a number of transition periods. At each turning point new language learning/teaching theories have been proposed and put to test in language labs. Some have been proven effective, while others have been discredited. Some general trends in the course of theory evolution have been observed : behaviorism to cognitive approaches, teacher-controlled to student-centered learning, broadcasting style instruction to interactive style, instructions en masse to individualism, tension-filled to stress-free classroom environment, among others. The language lab system paradigms have accordingly shifted through various phases ; from simplistic listening labs to enhanced and fully equipped audio-visual labs, followed by computer-assisted language labs and media centers. These changes in theories and systems have not occurred utterly independently. They have served as catalysts for each other as well as affected and predetermined how students learn (and how teachers teach) in language labs. This paper examines how technological innovations and new language learning/teaching theories have affected the developments of language labs and the students' activities therein through the years. The author will then propose some perspectives for future language lab developments. As a 21^<st> century language lab paradigm, the author will present a model of Virtual Media Center (VCM), which is a futuristic and innovative learning space to completely change the concept of language labs.
