The purpose of this paper is to investigate the influence of relaxation techniques on the sense of comfort. The subjects were 31 adults (4 males and 27 females). They were attendees of two workshops on stress and coping. In both workshops, they exercised three relaxation techniques successively and were requested to evaluate their sense of comfort at the beginning of the workshop, at the end of each of the three techniques, and at the end of the workshop. A rating scale incorporatig five categories, from "very uncomfortable (or unrelieved)" to "very comfortable (or relieved)", was adopted to evaluate the sense of comfort. The following four types of subjects were found in regard to how their sense of comfort had changed : (1) rising type, that the sense of comfort continued to rise until the end of the workshop (10 subjects), (2) peaking type, that the sense of comfort continued to rise until the end of the third technique and fell slightly after (11 subjects), (3) unstable type, that the sense of comfort rose and fell unstably but did not fall lower than at the beginning of the workshop (5 subjects), (4) falling type, that the sense of comfort fell lower at a certain point in the evaluation than at the beginning of the workshop (5 subjects). These results suggest that further investigation is necessary to clarify what factors make the sense of comfort fall in unstable or falling types and how to prevent this decline.
