This study examines comparisons of four distinct groups of foreign language learners at a Japanese university : false beginners, intermediate learners, advanced learners, and returnees. Focusing primarily on the affective nature of foreign language exposure and experience, assessment is made on changes in self-perception, language expression and overall changes in self. By comparing foreign language learners to returnees (bilingual and bicultural Japanese), the paper addresses whether there is a qualitative difference regarding communication style and view of self among language learners at different levels. Quantitative data based on an 80 item questionnaire is presented to illustrate significant differences for each group comparison. Results show that, as the learners progress in language proficiency, they show some changes in self-perception and develop new ways of self-expression.
