In this paper, distribution of contact pressure between rolls in cold rolling is examined experimentally and theoretically. In cold rolling in which the thickness of strip tends to become thinner, it is difficult to roll flat strip because the elastic deformation of the roll is larger than the plastic deformation of the strip and the configuration of deformed rolls is intricate. To exarine such intricate deformation of a roll and to find the method to control the deformation of a roll, it is of cardinal importance to obtain experimentally and analytically the distribution of the contact pressure between rolls. In this report, the measuring method of the contact pressure between rolls by using a pressure measurement film is examined, and the theoretical analysis in which the contact pressure is replaced by the concentrated forces at many points along the roll barrel is carried out. The elastic deformation of rolls and a film in contact, where the film is held between two rolls, is analyzed. As a result, it is found that plastics have to be used as the material of rolls for the measurement of the pressure distribution between rolls, in order that the roll deformation may not be disturbed by the insertion of the film. Finally, it is confirmed that there is good agreement between the theoretical results and experimental ones obtained by using the 6-high mill models made of acrylic plastic.
