In this study, the transition phenomena of lubricating oils and some reference samples have been examined by means of torsional braid analysis (TBA). The viscoelastic properties of lubricating oils were measured in the wide temperature range from -120℃ to +100℃, and relative rigidity and relative viscosity were calculated. From the results of examination of viscoelastic behavior, it was found that two transition points existed on the solidifying process of lubricating oil, one was the transition from viscous liquid to viscoelastic solid and the other from viscoelastic solid to elastoplastic solid. The former transition point was obtained as an equivalent pour-point from the temperature dependence curve of relative rigidity, and the latter was obtained as a temperature at the peak of temperature dependence curve of logarithmic decrement. It is clarified that TBA is effective for the examination of transition phenomena of lubricating oils in the wide temperature range.
