The mechanism of flame stabilization and combustion promotion by plasma jets with air feedstock, observed in supersonic combustion with a transverse fuel injection, has been investigated numerically. The numerical simulation is based on time-dependent, two-dimensional complete Navier-Stokes equations, with a six-species, eight-step reaction model combined with Zel'dvich chain reactions. Following results are obtained : 1. An air plasma jet with sufficient input power and feedstock flow rate establishes a high temperature recirculation zone with an adequate scale, which works for a flame stabilization as that produced by a walk step. 2. The effectiveness of air plasma jets increases mainly with an input electric power. 3. For a fixed flow rate, air plasma jets require about three times of the electric power to exhibit the same order effectiveness as with oxygen plasma jets. 4. When the injection slit of air plasma-jet is located downstream of the fuel injection slit, the required input power for a desirable combustion progress is usually smaller than that when it is located upstream, as in the case of oxygen plasma jets.
