High IPF (ice packing factor) operation is one of the most effective ways to reduce the cost of ice thermal storage air conditioning system. In this conception, the ice thermal storage air conditioning system installed in Building H of the Shonan campus of Tokai University has been operating for two years under the high IPF value of 70%. Although the IPF value of conventional systems is 50-60%, the results of this experiment enable us to verify possibility of high IPF operation, excepting a little problem to estimate the precise ice volume. To examine this problem and operating characteristics under the IPF value of 80%, at first, the icing/thawing processes ware experimented using an experimental ice thermal storage tank, which was designed with the same icing coil as used in the above demonstration system. Next, the electric power consumption, the off-peak shift ratio and other performances of the system were estimated by computer simulation. This study led to advances in our understanding of the high IPF ice thermal storage air conditioning systems, as follows; ・Sufficient heat exchange capacity was available even at the high IPF of 80%. ・A simple method of precisely determining the amount of ice was developed. This is essential to control of the system at a high IPF. ・Compensation for the deteriorated coefficient of performance associated with high-IPF operation derives from the reduced heat loss and the pre-cooling load from a smaller surface area and water volume (because the tank is smaller). So, this does not necessarily lead to increase the consumption of electric power. ・Failure of the icing coil, which is likely to occur if re-icing operation begins before the ice has completely thawed, can be avoided by the simplified limit-control method. Thus the off-peak shift ratio is not deteriorated.
