Sulfanilate has been studied as an eluent for the separations of common anions from their mixtures on a silica-based anion-exchanger column in an ion chromatography. Anions in the effluent from the column were monitored with a photometric detector. When a 7×10^<-3> M sulfanilate eluent (pH 5.7) was employed, anions such as iodate, chloride, nitrite, bromide, nitrate, sulfate, valerate, nicotinate, 4-hydroxybenzoate and malonate were found to be resolved within 18 min. The sulfanilate eluent was compared with phthalate and benzoate eluents which were widely used in ion chromatography with a photometric detector, and gave resolution of the anion mixtures as well as phthalate and benzoate eluents; concentration and pH of each eluent were adjusted to give optimal separation. Consequently, sulfanilate was found to be useful eluent for ion chromatographic separations of various anions using a silica-based anion-exchange column and a photometric detector.
