An earlier paper (1) described a planned experiment at the Chalk River Nuclear Laboratories (CRNL) to measure the relative biological effectivenes (RBE) of tritium for the induction of acute myeloid leukaemia (AML). This experiment, involving over 5000 male CBA/H mice, is now more than one-half completed. Irradiations of the mice began in September 1986 and were completed in January 1987. To the end of September 1988,3411 mice have died, and blood and tissue examinations on these animals are progressing well. Of these, 104 have been confirmed as having AML, and 125 are still being reviewed. The remaining 3182 dead mice have been diagnosed as not having AML. This presentation briefly reviews the protocol for this experiment, describes the tritium and X-ray dosimetry, and gives the AML results obtained to date.
