A historical summary of polychaetous annelids from Antarctica shows that 457 species have been named to 1965; 65.7 per cent are endemic; about 10 per cent occur in circum-Antarctic seas, and fewer than 10 per cent are cosmopolitan. Nineteen areas are recognized from which samples have been taken in recent expeditions of the United States of America. About 200 useful samples come from shelf to abyssal depths. New faunas are recognized; one occurs in intertidal and shallow depths of the Antarctic Peninsula; others are in deep slope and abyssal depths surrounding the continent.
